Reading Specialist Teacher

 

Tucker Maxon is looking for a part-time to full-time Reading Specialist Teacher to work with K-5 students on reading and writing interventions individually and in small groups, in-person, on-site at our SE Portland campus. We are launching a new Literacy Initiative and this position will coordinate overall strategy for curriculum, tutoring, library, OBOB, and SMART program at the school.

Tucker Maxon School independent, nonprofit preschool through 5th grade school currently has 96 enrolled students and 30 dedicated staff. Approximately 15-20% of our students are children who are deaf or hard of hearing. In September, we are becoming a part of Multnomah County’s Preschool for All. Duties:

  • Create positive, well-organized and orderly learning environment where children feel welcome and comfortable.
  • Prepare developmentally appropriate lesson plans
  • Demonstrate unconditional respect and love for children and their well-being without regard to race, religion, language, socioeconomic, gender, and physical limitations.
  • Integrate needs related to deafness into a well-balanced classroom.
  • Focus on both hearing and deaf children, and address the “whole child”.
  • Accommodate differing language levels, auditory skill levels, behavioral needs and/or learning styles within the classroom.
  • Promotes interaction and learning among peers.
  • Provide an appropriate example for students with personal conduct.
  • Foster positive relationships with students, parents, fellow teachers, non-teaching personnel, and administration through excellent communication.
  • Actively support the nonprofit mission of the school.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Principal and/or Executive Director.

 

Qualifications:

  • Reading endorsement on teaching license or certificate highly preferred.
  • Experience of at least one-year teaching reading to elementary students is required Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Leadership skills and the ability to work collaboratively with elementary and preschool teachers
  • Proven track record of teaching success
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Someone who looks for solutions not problems
  • An interest or background in social and emotional learning (SEL)
  • You must have a Criminal Registry Number, or apply for and be granted a Criminal Registry Number ASAP
  • Sense of humor

 

Compensation:

  • $42,000 – $45,000 Annual Salary for full-time
